Tony Cocktail Lounge Reed & Greenough Draws Well-Heeled Patrons

November 2011

The Marina has no shortage of bars, many of them loud, crowded and more conducive to grabbing a beer and watching the game than having a conversation. But with the opening of Reed & Greenough, an upscale cocktail lounge on Scott Street, there’s a spot for a pre- or post-dinner drink that feels more like a tony Pacific Heights living room than a bar.

And that eclectic, private-club vibe is exactly what owner Paul Owens (Tortilla Heights, Fishbowl Bar & Grill) was going for with Reed & Greenough. His inspiration came from his travels, especially from hotel lounges. The bar’s long, open, hardwood expanse was designed by Kendal Agins of Agins Interiors, who ransacked flea markets and antique shops for collectors’ items to create the decor. The copper-accented mahogany bar, built-in bookshelves, zebra print chairs, leather sofas, black-and-white photos, and other accents accentuate the clubby, old-world feel. There is also a gaming area in the back featuring two pool tables, an extra-large shuffleboard, and a dartboard in case you’re in the mood to play. And the smaller, elevated seating area alongside the bar really does feel like a posh living room.

As for the name – posted on the building’s weathered wood facade – it came from an old plank that was looted from a nearby vodka and gin distillery after the 1906 earthquake and found during the renovation of the space.

Reed & Greenough has a broad selection of wine, beer, spirits, and custom cocktails from around the world. One unique feature is its selection of 10 wines on tap – literally kegs of wine served by the glass or in carafes. Owens points out the green advantage to not having to pay for the bottling and transportation of multiple cases of wine. There are five whites and five reds, all from California. There are also more than 30 bottles on the wine list, plus draft and bottled beers, classic cocktails, and several signature drinks including the Braveheart (Johnnie Walker Red, house-made ginger syrup, honey, lemon, and Angostura bitters) and the Moscow Beret (Svedka vodka, raspberries, aged balsamic, and topped with ginger beer).

Reed & Greenough has already made quite a splash due to its dress code, posted on its Facebook page, which states that this is “an upscale cocktail lounge serving people who use the local restaurants,” meaning no t-shirts, baseball caps, sneakers, or flip-flops. The dress code has drawn the ire of some potential patrons who have been turned away because of their attire. This doesn’t bother Paul Owens one bit.

“I’m interested in serving the neighborhood, and if you draw a mile-long circle around the bar, you’ll find some of the City’s wealthiest residents. Reed & Greenough is a cocktail lounge where you stop in before you have dinner at A16, Ristobar, Mezes – and you aren’t wearing flip-flops.” Owens says the bar draws a good crowd nightly with a demographic ranging from 30 to 65.

So stop on by, just leave that Giants cap behind.
