First and Third Thursday each month – Free Pet Fixes for Needy Families: Surgery performed by a licensed vet inside the Peninsula Humane Society’s surgery vehicle. No appointment necessary, but pets accepted on a first-come first-serve basis. One pet per family; dogs and cats only; no dogs over 80 pounds and no pets over 8 years old. Pets must fast from midnight on the night before surgery and be current on vaccinations; pets may drink water after midnight. First Thursday: 8–9 a.m. at Pet Camp (525 Phelps Street). Jan. 16 – Martin Luther King Jr. Day Animal Camp: Animal Camps combine animal care and behavior learning activities, team projects, craft activities, and hands-on interactions with animals such as cats, kittens, dogs, rabbits, rats, chickens, and more. Two camps are offered from 9 a.m.–4 p.m.: Grades 1–4 ($90) and Grades 5–8 ($90).

Jan. 20 – Puppy Movie Night: What better way to end the school week than getting cozy with canines, enjoying great pet movies, making friends with other young animal lovers, and snacking on pizza and popcorn at the SF/SPCA? This is a special, fun-filled night for children and an opportunity for parents to enjoy an evening out by themselves. 6:30–10 p.m. Appropriate for children in grades K-4. Pajamas are welcome! $30 per participant.

Jan 14 – The Elusive Snow Leopard: Dr. Rodney Jackson, director of the Snow Leopard Conservancy, will talk about his arduous fieldwork in high-mountain habitats and extreme low temperatures. He will describe the direct partnerships with local people that are the cornerstones of the Conservancy’s success, and will illustrate how the Conservancy uses satellite tracking and computer modeling with the goal of protecting sufficient habitats across large landscapes. Recommended for ages 12 and up. Free admission to lecture.

Jan. 7, 14, 21, 28 – Meet the Animals: The Randall Museum is home to over 100 animals that can no longer survive in the wild. Each Saturday at 11 a.m., a special selection of Randall Museum animal ambassadors will venture from their cages, pens, and perches to greet museum visitors up close. Kids and their families can meet rodents and amphibians; check out a Harris’ Hawk; and maybe even touch a tortoise.

Jan. 19 – Bay Area Predators in Nature: Join Glenn Martin, former environmental reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, for a presentation on how mid-level predators are thriving in the Bay Area. Geared for adults but all ages welcome. 7:30 p.m. Free, donations encouraged.

SEA LION ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Pier 39 commemorates the 22nd anniversary of the infamous sea lions’ arrival. Visitors can talk with knowledgeable naturalists from the Marine Mammal Center, and the “Sea Lion Encounter,” a 30-minute tour, departs on the hour from the sea lion statue near Pier 39’s entrance plaza.
