An end-of-the-school-year treat for kids and neighbors alike, Mayfair returns to the Claire Lilienthal School playground (Divisadero Street at North Point) on Saturday, May 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
More than just entertainment, Mayfair also helps raise a bit of money for the school, which is no small consideration these days. Last year, the fair raised $20,000 for school programs.
Mayfair is open to the public and admission is free, but there is a nominal fee for the food and amusements.
“While the event is designed as a treat for Claire Lilienthal students, Mayfair provides us a great opportunity to share the school with our larger community and we really enjoy seeing our neighbors become acquainted with our school,” said Christie Collins, one of the planners of this year’s event.
The event strikes a balance between newer attractions kids like (think jumpy houses) with games parents might remember from their own school carnival days (remember cake walks?). In addition to a variety of games, there will be a petting zoo, arts and crafts, music, and an array of foods that have been donated by various businesses, including some Korean specialties.
One of the most popular amusements each year is the dunking booth. Claire Lilienthal’s principal, William Hack, is clearly a good sport, since he will once again offer himself as a dunking victim at high noon. In fact, he draws the most applause when dunked. Teachers are also fair game for a plunge into the cold water. Don’t think the students are immune — their turn for dunking comes later in the day.
Lee & Young Orthodontics in Laurel Village has donated an iPad3 to the Mayfair raffle. Other prizes include a $250 gift certificate to Sports Basement and a one-month membership to Golden Gate Swim & Tennis Club. Raffle tickets will be available for $2 each at Mayfair.
