CRIME: CRIME ON THE BEAT
March 2011

BEWARE OF IDENTITY THIEVES
Feb. 25, 5:30 p.m.
Lombard Street at Steiner
Officers responded to a fraud report. The suspect used a forged credit card to check into a hotel. The owner of the credit card being used had reported some fraudulent charges. When the hotel was notified of the activity, they contacted the police. Officers found the suspect at the hotel and arrested him. The suspect had used a machine to place a different name on the stolen credit card. He also had false ID with the same name. They found a computer and several forms of fraudulent IDs and credit cards in his possession. The officers contacted the Secret Service, who began an investigation on this suspect. Stolen identity and fraud crimes have been on the rise. People need to be very aware of the information they put on the Internet, into garbage cans, over telephones/cell phones, and in the mail.

WHO’S THE VICTIM?
March 2, 10:40 p.m.
Lombard Street at Scott
Officers responded to a call of a robbery and car theft. When they arrived, they met with the two victims of the robbery. Both victims were amped up and difficult to understand. Their stories kept changing and were very suspicious. The officers began investigating the victims’ stories. It turned out the victims were in possession of a variety of illegal narcotics and it appeared they were robbed in a narcotics deal gone bad. A large amount of narcotics were seized and both “victims” went to jail for possession of illegal drugs for sales.

THIS GUY NEEDS A TIMEOUT
March 6, 1:50 a.m.
Marina Boulevard at Laguna
Officers responded to a call of an assault. When they arrived, they met the suspect who was obviously drunk. He began challenging the officers to a fight. The officers tried to cuff the suspect, but he resisted. Using minimal force, the suspect was placed in cuffs without injury to the officers or the suspect. Prior to the officers’ arrival, the suspect was in a fight with Safeway security and assaulted the security guard. The suspect’s girlfriend stopped him and they began to leave, but they apparently didn’t leave soon enough. The officers took the assault suspect into custody.

MARINA GARAGE THIEF NABBED
March 7, 4:30 a.m.
Beach Street at Baker
There has been an uptick recently in apartment building garage burglaries in the Marina. A citizen residing in this building happened to be leaving at an early morning hour. He went into the garage to find a burglar partially inside one of his neighbors’ vehicles. The burglar was startled and stated, “Just let me go.” He then ran past the resident, hopped on a bicycle, and rode off. The resident called the police and provided a description. Officers responded to the area. On their approach, they began looking for the suspect. Several blocks away, they located the suspect pedaling as fast as he could. The officers detained the subject. The witness identified the suspect and some of the victim’s property was recovered. The officers found several tools commonly used by burglars on the suspect. He also admitted to this burglary as well as several others. The suspect was booked for burglary.

O.J. AND VODKA DIDN’T MIX
March 11, 11:10 p.m.
Fillmore Street at Filbert
Officers were driving down Fillmore when they observed a person pouring vodka into an orange juice bottle. As they detained the subject for the open container, they watched him conceal the vodka/orange juice in his back pocket. Because of his evasive behavior, the officers patted him down for weapons. During the pat search, they felt something odd in his pocket. They asked the suspect what it was and he replied marijuana. He further stated that he didn’t have a medical card for possessing it. He was put under arrest. An arrest search, which is more thorough, revealed that the suspect was also in possession of cocaine. He was booked for the narcotics violations.

The bartender told this suspect that he had to leave. The suspect then punched the bartender in the face. The bartender and other patrons wrestled the suspect down until police arrived. He was booked for the battery and, being so drunk, as a danger to himself or others.

They stopped the car to cite the driver and he told the officers that he did not have his license on him. BOOZE WON’T RAISE YOUR IQ
March 20, 12:30 a.m.
Union Street at Laguna
A cab driver went into a business to use the restroom, leaving his keys in his cab. Two patrons of another establishment decided to take the cab themselves.

The cab managed to make it all the way to John Muir Drive before it was spotted by officers (it didn’t help that the cab driver couldn’t remember the cab number). Officers made a traffic stop and the passenger took off running down the beach. Alcohol may have been a factor that made the passenger’s think he could outrun the cops on the sand. The driver didn’t bother to attempt escape and surrendered to officers. He later told officers that he thought it was his friend’s car and he was the designated driver. The driver didn’t find the fact that it was a yellow cab to be unusual. They were both charged with several crimes.

MARINA GREEN METH HEAD
March 21, 4:10 a.m.
Marina Green Parking Lot
Officers were driving through the lot when they spotted an occupied van.
They stopped to investigate. They found two people who said their van had broken down and that they had been waiting since 11 p.m. for someone to come and fix it. While the officers were talking to the pair, they noticed drug paraphernalia. Upon closer inspection, they found methamphetamine. The driver of the van admitted that the drugs were his so he was taken into custody. The passenger was released.
