New and noteworthy staff picks

Fiction/graphic novel: Chew Volume 1: Taster’s Choice
by John Layman

Violent. Hilarious. The 2010 Eisher Award winner for best new series, and deservedly so. Great cast of varied characters in a world where chicken has been outlawed, the FDA is king, and Tony Chu is the rising new agent. Slick, stylish illustrations and a Tarantino-esque comedic clip make this series a must read for the leisurely comic collector.

Nonfiction: Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand
This is one terrific book! It is more than a story of survival and the human condition. Hillenbrand sweeps you up into the Depression, the Olympics and, most prominently, World War II. Her writing is clear and direct and, most important, she knows how to keep the reader’s interest on fast-forward. My highest recommendation!
– Bill Dito

Nonfiction: The 4-Hour Body by Timothy Ferriss
From the author who taught you how to set up a four-hour workweek comes this ultraguide to “rapid fat loss, incredible sex, and becoming superhuman.” Starting with the fundamentals of a healthy life and moving into perfecting sleep and improving sex, this guide covers everything, including why many popular diets are wrong. Make 2011 the year for a new you!

For kids – classics I forgot to read: The BFG by Roald Dahl
One of the all-time best books to read out loud! Join Sophie on an unforgettable journey into Giant Country – a place dangerous for all human beings. Hilarious and, of course, uniquely Roald Dahl. I love this book!
