ON & OFF CHESTNUT STREET
April showers, okay … but in May?

Really? More showers throughout May? Well if April showers brought May flowers, at least May showers seem to have brought a whole host of new openings.

Back when the showers were still in April, Sorry I broke your heart hair salon opened on Chestnut between Broderick and Divisadero in the former Hana Ichi Flowers/General Store space. Owners Kelly Gayle and Sophia Callas have a following from their past stints at Posh and other salons across the city, and their wittily named salon seems to have taken off right from the start. Offering haircuts for men and women, along with blow-drying and styling, Sophia is head stylist. On the color side, Kelly offers full and partial highlights, Balayage, tints, and gloss/toner. Other services including relaxers, Keratin treatments, hair and feather extensions, as well as bridal services offered upon consultation. Sorry I broke your heart is open Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday, noon to 8 p.m., and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. Stop by, call, or schedule an appointment online.

A short block away, in the former Kasa Indian Eatery location, Tacko has opened its first West Coast location after a brief remodel to lighten and brighten up the space. Tacko is owned by chef Nick Fasanella who believes “it is your right to be able to eat slow food fast.” As you can imagine, a wide range of tacos, quesadillas and burritos are offered, using Mahi Mahi that is line caught, beef and pork sourced from local, organic family-run farms, and chicken from Fulton Valley Farm in Sonoma. The menu is rounded out with a variety of salads, soups, and sides, as well as Nick’s lobster roll, which explains the Nantucket connection. Tacko is open Monday thru Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Just a few doors away from Tacko, the former Armada Tattoo and Gallery, at the corner of Fillmore and Pixley, has been transformed into a rustic, urban wine bar. Pe Yale (pronounced pee-ya-lay) means wine glass in Farsi, and the wine list spans the globe, though with a strong California focus. The food menu is available daily from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., and besides the usual offerings of artisan cheeses, charcuterie, nuts, and olives, there are also some appetizing grilled tandoori chicken skewers with a creamy Tuscan dipping sauce, or grilled beef skewers served with a cashew nut and sun-dried tomato sauce. The owners take great pride in having created this hip setting with 80 percent recycled or reclaimed building materials, which gives it a warm yet edgy vibe. Pe Yale is open Tuesday thru Thursday 4 p.m. to midnight, Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m., and Sundays 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Closed Mondays. Check out their daily Happy Hour with bottles 20 percent off before 7 p.m.
