Police report few leads in murder at Marina District nightclub

As the investigation continues into who killed 22-year-old Jelvon Helton at the Gravity Room at 3251 Scott Street, the police captain of Northern Station says the department is working with the owners of the club to ensure that this sort of violence will stop.

On Nov. 1, as revelers were celebrating a victorious end to the World Series in the surrounding streets, Helton was shot multiple times in the chest just before midnight inside the club. He died shortly after being transported to San Francisco General Hospital.

“We closed the club down after the shooting,” says Capt. Ann Mannix. “It was a seven-day emergency shutdown.”

There are no plans to shut the club down permanently.

The club is currently for sale, and the SFPD is hoping to expedite a change of ownership. “We have a feeling that new owners will see that things improve,” said Captain Mannix.

Neighbors have complained frequently about the noise and the fights that have occurred in and around the club.

“One thing we don’t want to have is the status quo,” says Mannix.

Though the bar was packed with patrons, no one could give a good description of the shooter. Police are looking for an African-American man in his 20s as a suspect.

Helton was a star wrestler for the Scholar Development Network Wrestling team. He placed in state championships as well as western regional and national championships as a youth. During high school, he played football for the San Francisco Seahawks of the San Francisco Police Activities League for several years and later played basketball for Galileo High School’s All-City Team. Helton graduated from Ida B. Wells High School.

He reportedly ran into trouble with the police a few times in recent years. He was on the list of alleged gang members compiled by City Attorney Dennis Herrera in 2007 as a member of the Western Addition’s Knock Out Posse.

Police have said they are not sure if the shooting was gang related.

Neighbors are frustrated that so many people were in the area of the shooting but no detailed description of the suspect is available. Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to contact San Francisco police by calling the anonymous tip line at 415-575-4444 or 415-TIPS-411.
