Farmers returning to the Marina

On Sunday morning, June 6, in what many hope will be
a seasonal migration, 40 certified farmers will return to the Marina after a long hiatus.

San Francisco’s newest farmers’ market will be debuting at Fort Mason Center, and according to California Farmers’ Market Association (CFMA) president Gail Hayden, its back by popular demand. Having sent out surveys to thousands of Marina residents about the viability of a weekly market returning to the Marina, Hayden says they received an overwhelming return of positive feedback, which encouraged most of the farmers from the original Marina Farmers’ Market to return.

Ann Lazarus, executive director at Fort Mason Center, sees the market as filling a real need in the neighborhood and hopes that residents and visitors alike will take the opportunity to explore the many venues, events, artists, and services the center’s campus has to offer.

What can you expect at the new location? First, Greens Restaurant will be featured each week in the market, offering morning coffee and pastries along with ready-made seasonal salads and vegetarian meals to go. The grand opening will also feature a book signing by Greens executive chef Annie Somerville.

While our long, cool spring may have had its detractors, it has produced the strongest cherry crop in years, with plump, meaty fruit bursting with cherry flavor. Look for Bing cherries from G&S in Brentwood and Buscalachi Farms in Linden, the cherry capital of the world. Sweet strawberries are in from Watsonville as well as sun-kissed organic white peaches from Kashiwase Farms in Winton. The popular Happy Boy Farms will be there with their wide assortment of organic veggies, along with Living Waters, Nahas, Swank, and Wholeness farms. Cipponeri will be have fruits, nuts and Stockton red grapes, and

CMC will have their amazing supersized princess raisins.

Other Marina favorites include Far West Funghi featuring what has been a bumper-crop of mushrooms this year, Violini Farms with asparagus and Meyer lemons, and Roberto Rodriquez’s conventional and organic berries. A number of unique farm producers will also be part of the regular line-up including Petaluma Eggs with farm-fresh eggs, and Holding Ranch featuring grass-fed beef, lamb, chicken, and pork. Sea 2U will have fresh fish, and Blue Ocean Smokehouse will have a variety of smoked fish delicacies. Nuremburg Sausages will have their house-made sausages and fresh sauerkraut, and you can look for “Foggy Morning” and other artisanal cheeses from Nicasio Cheese.

There will also be a variety of fresh baked goods from Bakers of Paris, La Boheme, Mom’s Apple Pie, Delicious Crepes, and a whole selection of gluten-free offerings from Flourchylde Bakery in Novato. Top it all off with some of the inventive sorbets from Scream Sorbet featuring farm-fresh produce from Happy Boy Farms (sugar snap pea sorbet? It’s supposedly screamin’ good!), and you have one sweet lineup for the market.

The Fort Mason Center Farmers’ Market will be open every Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., beginning Sunday, June 6. There is one-half hour free parking provided at Fort Mason Center, but now that spring looks to be here finally (just in time for summer), you’ll want to walk, bike or take the 28 Muni bus. There will be live music, cooking demonstrations, and a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. on opening day – so see you at the market!
