Crime on the beat: March–April 2010

KEEPING MARINA MOMS SAFE
Polk at Broadway
March 1, 10  a.m.
Officers responded to an apartment building because the manager wanted some trespassers removed from an apartment. Officers went to the apartment in question and identified two suspects, finding that one was a registered sex offender from Washington State with a warrant for his arrest.

Only problem was, it was non-extraditable. Not wanting to let a confirmed sex offender leave, the officers conferred with the SFPD investigations bureau and it was determined that he should have registered wherever he ended up. So he was arrested for a felony failure to register.

YOU CAN RUN …
Lombard Street
March 18, 7:45 a.m.
Officers responded to a hotel on Lombard Street regarding a fight in one of the rooms. As the officers came on scene, they observed a subject walking away from the room in question. The subject climbed onto the ledge of the building when he saw the officers and started running. The officers told him to stop but he did not listen  to them. Additional officers responded to the scene. As the subject ran into the courtyard, a waiting officer attempted to take the subject into custody. The subject did not cooperate and swung at the officers. An officer grabbed onto the subject’s jacket, but he slipped out it and took off running. Officers ran after him and were able to take him into custody after a struggle. The subject was identified and was on felony probation with a search condition. The officers located a glass pipe and methamphetamine on the subject, and he was transported to Northern Station and booked. Officers went back to the hotel room and made contact with the occupant to make sure everything was all right. The female subject was also on probation. A search of the hotel room came up empty. Thankfully, no officers were injured taking the suspect into custody.

Moscone Playground
March 29, 7:27 a.m.
The Northern parks officer was making a pass through Moscone Playground when she saw a guy lying in a sleeping bag on the ground, blocking the entrance to the women’s bathroom. She stopped to wake him and upon identifying him found that he was a wanted parolee. He was arrested and will be returned to prison.

STEALING IS A NO-NO
Union Street, Fillmore Street at Pine
April 7, 2:42 p.m.
Two women decided to go shopping in the area of Union Street. Problem was, they had no money – but they had large, empty bags. They hit three stores for over $1,500 worth of merchandise. By the time officers arrived, they had fled the area. Witnesses provided good descriptions of the suspects, the car they fled in, and their last known direction. Officers spotted the car with the described occupants on Fillmore and Pine Streets. The two were pulled over, a witness was brought to the scene, and a positive identification was made. The two went to jail for felony theft charges. Surprisingly, the two had priors for the same crimes.

SIDEWALK RIDES NOT A GOOD IDEA
Van Ness Avenue
April 11, 1:30 p.m.
Plainclothes officers driving an unmarked vehicle observed a white male on a mountain bike on the sidewalk of Van Ness Avenue. The suspect was in violation of the traffic code prohibiting adults from riding a bike on the sidewalk. The officers noticed that the suspect was looking into vehicles, possibly to break into them. Additional plainclothes officers joined the first officers after being notified of their observations. The suspect was then approached. After a record check, it was found that the suspect had an outstanding warrant out of San Bruno. The suspect was handcuffed and arrested.

BROTHERLY LOVE?
Scott Street
April 14, 5:20 p.m.
Officers responded to a restaurant located on Scott Street to make an arrest for an assault that had occurred the previous day. The suspect and victim are brothers and live in the same apartment with the suspect’s wife. On April 13, an argument broke out between the brothers when the suspect arrived home intoxicated. The suspect was upset over the relationship between the suspect’s wife and the brother. In the process of arguing, the suspect pushed the victim hard toward the window causing it to break and cutting the victim’s shoulder. It took 40 staples to close the wound. Before the officers arrived at the scene, the suspect had left the premises on foot in an unknown direction. Information was obtained as to his employment and subsequently the suspect was arrested in his place of employment for the felony assault.
