Artist’s rendition of Passage
The San Francisco Arts Commission invites the community to attend a dedication ceremony for a new public sculpture by Kent Roberts at the Moscone Recreation Center on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 11 a.m.

Located near the corner of Bay and Laguna streets, Passage is a 25-foot-long stainless steel ribbed sculpture resembling the skeleton of an old wooden ship that has come to rest on the park site. The sculpture is complete with a “wake” created out of molded concrete pavers that lay flush with the surface of the grass behind the sculpture. The artist envisions Passage as a monument to the ships that carried early settlers into San Francisco Bay from around the world, while also evoking the pleasure boats and commercial vessels that currently populate the nearby marina.

Roberts is a prominent Bay Area sculptor who has worked as an exhibition designer at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art for many years. The artist works with a variety of materials including steel, bronze, stone, wood, and concrete and he often references boat and bridge imagery in his sculptures.

The artist and city officials will be on hand for the dedication.
