Golden Gate Bridge west sidewalk closure extended to mid-May

On January 17, 2012, the west sidewalk of the Golden Gate Bridge closed for improvements to the bike path leading to the entrance of the sidewalk at the south end of the Bridge. Additionally, the portion of the Battery East Trail on the south end of the Bridge was also closed for improvements.

The anticipated re-opening of the west sidewalk was April 1, 2012. The reopening has been moved back to mid-May 2012 for several key reasons, including inclement weather and soil removal.

Bicyclists will be directed to continue to use the east sidewalk for the duration of the west sidewalk closure. Existing detour signage will be updated with the new reopening information to best inform and direct bicyclists and pedestrians.

As part of the partnership with the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District involving a series of visitor experience improvements on the south end of the span, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and National Park Service are making improvements to the section of the Battery East Bay Trail on the south end of the Bridge, including the portion leading onto the west sidewalk of the Bridge.

This construction effort is the final phase of improvements on the Battery East Bay Trail and includes installation of dedicated bicycle and pedestrian lanes, trail resurfacing, grade improvements, and replaced fencing and lighting.
