Union Street to Mayor: Clean up the streets

Upon the inauguration of London Breed as the city’s mayor, Union Street Association President Eleanor Carpenter congratulated her but implored her to deal with the city’s homeless and dirty streets. “Please do everything in your power to take care of existing homeless while making it harder and less attractive for the influx of new homeless,” Carpenter wrote in a July 16 letter to the mayor that was shared with USA members. Carpenter noted that the city recently lost a major convention due to the city’s reputation for filthy streets. “While it’s important to remain compassionate and an advocate for our homeless, it is equally important to recognize and care for our residents, our businesses, our neighborhoods who are increasingly paying dearly for insufficient or failed programs,” the letter stated.
