In a recent article for Laker/Lutz News, our sister publication from Florida, staff journalist B.C. Manion gives advice to storm victims. Although Hurricane Ian did not make a direct hit in the area of the Laker/Lutz News coverage like originally estimated, the damages of the natural disaster were still felt by those living and working in the area. From not walking through standing water, watching for fallen power lines, and being alert for the smell of gas, Manion has some helpful tips for keeping citizens safe the the moments and days following a major storm.

“If you have roof damage, need tree trimming or removal or require another type of repair, be sure to secure bids for the work and require proof that the contractor is licensed and insured,” writes Manion. “Get a written contract detailing the work to be performed, the completion date, the types of materials to be used, warranties for the work, the start and finish dates, and who is responsible for cleanup and trash removal. Do not pay upfront for the work, although partial payments sometimes are a reasonable request. Be sure to check references.”
