On and Off Chestnut

Marina beauty is more than skin deep

Living in the most beautiful neighborhood in the City, Marina dwellers strive to maintain a similar beauty in their personal lives. A number of new businesses have recently opened on and off Chestnut Street to help with exactly that, in a wide variety of ways.

On Lombard Street, next to Mel’s Diner, The Social Beauty Co. has opened what they call “not your average beauty salon.” The new salon delivers on that promise with an upscale setting, a full list of services, plus networking and socializing – you might just want to stop in to hang out and play a while! Their current service menu includes facial waxing, threading, and tinting; eyelash extensions; makeup applications including special services for the bride’s big day; body waxing; facial treatments; a photo booth (with costumes!); and coming soon: nails, hair styling and spray tanning. Through their extensive network, they can also connect you to a variety of other professional beauty services – their tagline is “Pretty United.” Follow them on Facebook and watch for their website to go live soon. They are open Tuesday through Saturday,
10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

This beautiful new space boasts bamboo floors, reclaimed wood architecture, shoji screen doors, and skylights. Zazen will offer 40-plus yoga classes a week with highly skilled and educated teachers, daily meditation sessions, Eastern and Western style massage, and sensory deprivation floatation in unique custom float chambers from Float Lab. Last but not least, a place to see and be seen is the latest addition to the prolific Marina wine bar lineup. After four years of operating Marina & Kebob on Chestnut Street at Avila, owner Coskun “George” Bektas has transformed his restaurant into the Marina Bistro & Wine Bar. Featuring a selection of California wines by the glass and bottle in a contemporary but casual setting, Marina Bistro & Wine Bar will also have a wide-ranging menu offering seasonal fare. From starters like crab cakes to heirloom tomatoes and farm fresh greens in a variety of salads, to entrees like duck ragout or paella, there will be something to appeal to all tastes and to pair nicely with their wine selection. Lunch and dinner served Monday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and brunch on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the kitchen staying open until 10 p.m.
