In their latest piece for The Laker/Lutz News, staff writer B.C. Manion reports on the hard work done by Pasco County staff and volunteers to keep disaster shelters running smoothly and coming together quickly in times of need. During times of disaster, or anticipated disaster, Pasco County Schools close the district’s schools and child care programs and cancel school-related events in order to open up shelters in their place and give evacuees a safe space in which to go. During the most recent preparations stemming from the threat posed by Hurricane Ian, the district had shelter operations at Cypress Creek, Sunlake, Wiregrass Ranch, Wesley Chapel and Fivay high schools; at Cypress Creek, Centennial, Weightman and Pasco middle schools; and, at the River Ridge Complex.

“The superintendent told the school board, audience and those watching the board meeting on YouTube that he couldn’t let the day pass without expressing gratitude for the district’s incredible team,” writes Manion.
