Lucky Penny Restaurant

Phot: Ben Salvador (via Google images)

The too-cool snobs on Yelp just don’t get Lucky Penny. This is not a place to order grilled halibut or prime rib (though they do serve both), it’s a great old diner that puts out dependable, reasonably priced breakfasts and sandwiches.

Being a short order cook is one of the toughest jobs in the restaurant business and with a large menu it’s even harder, but the cooks at Lucky Penny are adept and consistent. It’s hard to find classic shredded hash browns anymore, but Lucky Penny’s are crisp and golden outside, soft and fluffy inside. Special requests such as medium poached or soft scrambled eggs are expertly handled and the service is friendly (go a few times and the waitresses remember your order). You can also get a freshly ground choice beef hamburger with French fries for under $5 that puts some of those trendy $10 burgers to shame.

Tip: Open 24 hours

Not to miss: Hash browns, pancakes, country-fried steak, burgers, BLT, omelets
